Two balances, two jobs
Redeemable points pay for awards. Qualification activity earns elite status. These can be different currencies. Delta uses MQDs for its published Medallion thresholds, while Hyatt distinguishes qualifying nights and base points from bonus points. Entering your spendable balance into a status tracker can therefore give a completely wrong result.
A benefit is not the same as a guarantee
Read the precise scope of a perk. A room upgrade may depend on availability, brand and room category. Airline priority can vary by ticket, operating carrier and airport. Even a useful status tier should be valued against how often you will use it, not the longest list of advertised features.
Build a personal use case: how many trips remain, how many hotel breakfasts you would otherwise buy, how many bags you check, and whether your routes have lounges you can enter.
Model the remaining year
Illustrative case: you have 22 qualifying nights and six planned nights. A 30-night goal leaves two nights unfilled after planned travel. At $140 per extra night plus $40 in travel costs, chasing it costs $320. Estimate the incremental next-tier benefits for travel you will actually take before committing.
Do not count benefits you already receive through a credit card or a different program twice. The best status can be the one your ordinary travel earns without changing your itinerary.
Use the planner correctly
Select the program, tier and qualification year. Enter posted activity separately from planned activity. The planner reports remaining requirements, not official approval. Reconcile against the account dashboard before any qualifying purchase. Lifetime status, invitation-only tiers and individually targeted challenges need separate rules.
